This is a first major result for the new European legislation on digital technology. The social network TikTok announced this Monday morning that it would permanently withdraw from the EU the function of its new TikTok Lite application which rewards users for time spent in front of screens.
The controversial feature rewards users in exchange for watching videos or other actions like liking videos and following content creators. These virtual coins can then be exchanged for gift cards on partner sites. The European Commission then estimated that the mechanism posed “serious risks for the mental health of users”.
This is a first significant success for the European legislation on digital services (“Digital Services Act”, DSA), the objective of which is to regulate online content by forcing large platforms to respect the laws and cooperate with regulators.
