Syrian Opposition Takes Control of Hama Amid Warm Welcome
Activists have reported that residents of Hama city welcomed the Syrian opposition factions with enthusiasm as they took control of the area on December 5, 2024. This event is part of the ongoing military operation named 'Deterrence of Aggression.' Video clips shared on social media showcased the initial reactions of Hama's residents, with some expressing joy through ululations as the opposition forces entered their neighborhoods.
In a poignant moment, activist Mohammed Al-Faisal shared a video capturing the entry of opposition forces into Hama, highlighting the emotional reception from the locals. Another activist, Ahmed Al-Qassem, documented his return to his village, Kafr Nabudah, after a 13-year absence, expressing his joy and relief at the return of what he described as the rightful ownership of the land. This sentiment reflects a broader sense of hope among many displaced Syrians as the opposition gains ground.
The Syrian opposition forces not only entered Hama but also took control of significant locations, including the military airport and the police command building, and reportedly released hundreds of prisoners from the central prison. Images circulating on social media depicted opposition forces patrolling the streets of Hama, further illustrating the shift in power dynamics within the region.
Following the successful takeover of Hama, the Joint Operations Department of the Syrian opposition indicated that they are poised to advance into Homs, with reports of anti-aircraft weapons intercepting drones in the area. This military campaign has seen the opposition engaged in clashes with Syrian army forces since November 27, with recent victories including the capture of Aleppo and expansion into Idlib province.
