Syrian Opposition Gains Control of Hama Amid Tactical Withdrawal by Government Forces
The Syrian armed opposition has declared complete control over the city of Hama following successful military operations. The opposition's victory comes after they managed to seize key locations, including the Hama Military Airport and police headquarters. Pictures released by the opposition show their fighters celebrating in various neighborhoods of Hama, and they also reported the liberation of inmates from Hama Central Prison.
In response to the opposition's advances, Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas announced a tactical withdrawal of government forces from Hama. He stated that this redeployment was necessary to preserve civilian lives and avoid further escalation of violence in the city. The Ministry of Defense emphasized its commitment to reclaiming areas controlled by what it termed 'terrorist organizations.'
The opposition's military operations commander, Ahmed al-Sharaa, indicated that the capture of Hama was not driven by revenge but was a strategic move in their ongoing conflict. He noted that the opposition forces had begun entering the city and were actively engaging with government troops, who were reportedly being targeted by drone strikes.
Minister Abbas also highlighted the ongoing battle against terrorist groups, claiming they are supported by regional and international actors. He reassured the Syrian populace of the military's resolve to restore security and urged patience during this tumultuous period.
