Syrian Opposition Gains Ground in Aleppo Countryside
In a significant escalation of conflict in northern Syria, Syrian opposition factions have taken control of 32 villages and strategic points in the western countryside of Aleppo. This territorial gain, equivalent to approximately 245 square kilometers, follows intense clashes with Syrian regime forces as part of the newly launched operation dubbed "Deterrence of Aggression." This operation marks the first major breach of the ceasefire agreement established four years ago, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.
The Military Operations Administration, an alliance of various armed factions, reported that they successfully seized towns including Arnaz and Kafr Bisin on November 28, 2024. The clashes have reportedly led to the deaths of 37 regime forces and 60 members of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and its allied factions, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The ongoing violence has also resulted in civilian casualties, with reports of airstrikes by Syrian and Russian forces targeting opposition-held areas, leading to the deaths of a woman and a child, along with numerous injuries.
Humanitarian Impact and Displacement
The recent military advances by opposition factions have raised hopes for the return of over 100,000 displaced individuals to their homes, potentially alleviating some of the humanitarian suffering in northwestern Syria. However, the ongoing conflict has also triggered a new wave of displacement, with hundreds of families fleeing towards the Turkish border due to the intensifying violence.
The Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) reported that the battles and airstrikes have caused significant destruction in civilian areas, particularly in towns such as Sarmin and Kansafra. The situation remains dire as the regime's military operations continue, with heavy artillery and air raids targeting opposition positions and civilian infrastructure.
Regime's Response and Future Outlook
In response to the opposition's advances, the Syrian regime has labeled the clashes as a "terrorist attack" and claims to be inflicting heavy losses on what it describes as terrorist organizations. The regime's Ministry of Defense stated that it is cooperating with unspecified "friendly forces" to counter the opposition's offensive.
This resurgence of conflict is particularly notable as it represents the first significant military engagement since the ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey in March 2020. As the situation evolves, the potential for further escalation remains high, with both sides preparing for continued confrontations in the region.
