Hemeti Accuses Egypt of Air Strikes on Sudanese Forces

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, has publicly accused Egypt of conducting air strikes against his forces in the Jebel Moya region. In a video statement released on October 9, 2024, Hemeti claimed that Egyptian aircraft had 'treacherously' attacked RSF positions, leading to significant casualties. He expressed that the RSF had remained silent about Egypt's involvement for a prolonged period but felt compelled to speak out as the situation escalated.

Hemeti further alleged that Egypt has been providing military training to the Sudanese army and supplying them with advanced drones, indicating a broader regional involvement in the ongoing conflict. He specifically pointed out that the bombs used in these air strikes were American-made, raising questions about international arms sales and military support in the conflict.

The conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army, which reignited in April 2023, has led to a humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and exacerbating famine and disease across the nation. Hemeti's accusations come on the heels of the Sudanese army regaining control of Jebel Moya after fierce fighting, which had previously been under RSF control since June.

The RSF leader's remarks also hinted at the involvement of multiple foreign nations, suggesting that 6 to 7 unnamed countries are supporting the Sudanese army either directly or indirectly. Despite the gravity of Hemeti's claims, there has been no immediate response from the Egyptian government regarding these allegations.

The ongoing violence in Sudan underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. U.S.-brokered negotiations in Geneva last September failed to yield a ceasefire, although both parties agreed to improve access to humanitarian aid. As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely, hoping for a return to stability in a region long plagued by unrest.
