Devastating Missile Attack on Sevastopol Sparks Tensions
The port city of Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula experienced a devastating missile attack that left numerous people dead and many injured. Moscow has placed the blame for the attack squarely on Kiev and Washington, threatening severe consequences. According to Russian sources, the attack involved five US ATACMS missiles fired by Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 4 individuals and injuring more than 150 others, many of whom are children.
Moscow's Response and Accusations
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the attack as barbaric and stated that Moscow knows exactly who is behind it. He accused American military advisers of operating the technically complex missiles and emphasized that the US bears the same responsibility as Ukraine for the casualties. The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador to Moscow, Lynne Tracy, to deliver a note of protest, reinforcing their stance that the US is directly involved in the hostilities.
The attack on Sevastopol occurred in the north of the city, hitting a beach that has been the seat of the Russian Black Sea Fleet for 240 years. The high number of casualties has led to a significant media coverage within Russia, portraying the West and Ukraine as inhumane aggressors. Mykhailo Podoliak, advisor in the Ukrainian presidential office, referred to the victims as 'civilian occupiers,' which further fueled Moscow's narrative.
The US had begun delivering ATACMS missiles to Ukraine in the fall of 2023, relaxing an unofficial ban on using its weapons against Russian territory. However, under international law, Crimea is still considered part of Ukraine, allowing Kyiv to target military installations there with Western weapons. Moscow has suffered numerous setbacks due to these new Western weapons, leading to increased media coverage of civilian casualties in Russian-controlled areas.
Kiev's attacks have primarily targeted anti-aircraft facilities, but numerous other military installations have also been reported destroyed.
