Qatar Engages in Diplomatic Talks on Syrian Crisis
Qatar has initiated discussions with Türkiye, Iran, and Jordan regarding the ongoing crisis in Syria, emphasizing the need for dialogue and understanding among Syrian parties. Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held phone calls with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while also receiving a call from Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The conversations addressed the latest developments in Syria as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the urgency of the situation, expressing deep concern over the recent escalations in Syria. The Prime Minister reiterated Qatar's commitment to urging all involved parties to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the crisis in accordance with international legitimacy and UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This resolution, passed in December 2015, calls for peace talks to facilitate a political solution to the Syrian conflict.
As the situation evolves, a meeting of foreign ministers from the Astana format countries—Turkey, Russia, and Iran—is anticipated to take place during the Doha Forum. This meeting aims to further address the Syrian crisis and explore avenues for peace. The Qatari minister underscored the importance of protecting civilians from the impacts of the ongoing conflict, advocating for a resolution that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people while maintaining the country's sovereignty and independence.
