Qatar Airways Expands Influence in Africa with 25% Stake in Airlink

In a strategic move to enhance its footprint in the African aviation market, Qatar Airways has announced its acquisition of a 25% stake in Airlink, a domestic airline operating in South Africa. This investment is part of Qatar Airways' broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the region and capitalize on the growing travel market across the continent. According to Qatar Airways Group CEO, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, this partnership not only reflects the airline's confidence in Airlink's operational capabilities but also underscores the importance of Africa to the future of Qatar Airways’ business.

The acquisition will facilitate easier access for passengers traveling to and from regional cities in southern and eastern Africa, allowing Qatar Airways to expand its network significantly. With Airlink operating flights to over 45 destinations in 15 African countries, the partnership is poised to enhance the airlines' codeshare arrangements, thereby improving connectivity for travelers. Al Meer emphasized that this move is vital for the economic success of the region, highlighting the promising growth potential within the African travel market.

Strengthening Partnerships and Expanding Destinations

During a recent press conference, Airlink CEO Rodger Foster expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that Qatar Airways' involvement as a shareholding partner provides strong support for Airlink's commitment to expanding its travel markets. The collaboration aims to harmonize the loyalty programs of both airlines, integrating Qatar Airways Privilege Club with Airlink Skybucks, which will enhance customer experience and loyalty.

Since December 2020, Qatar Airways has made significant strides in expanding its African network, adding nine new destinations and currently operating flights to 29 African locations. The investment in Airlink is expected to further solidify Qatar Airways' position as a leading carrier in Africa, complementing its minority stakes in several other international airlines, including British Airways and Cathay Pacific. As the aviation industry continues to recover and grow post-pandemic, Qatar Airways is well-positioned to leverage these partnerships to enhance its global operations.
