Qatar Airways Implements Ban on Pagers and Walkie-Talkies from Beirut Airport
In a significant move, Qatar Airways has announced a ban on all passengers departing from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on board its flights. This decision follows directives issued by the Lebanese Directorate General of Civil Aviation, aimed at enhancing safety and security amid recent events in Lebanon. The ban applies to both checked and carry-on baggage as well as air cargo, and will remain in effect until further notice.
The announcement, made via the airline's official account on the social media platform X, underscores the serious concerns surrounding the use of communication devices in the region. Reports indicate that at least 37 individuals lost their lives and nearly 3,000 were injured due to explosions linked to pager communications and other devices in recent days. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed these casualties, which occurred in various public settings including stores and funerals, causing widespread panic among the populace.
Security Concerns Following Recent Explosions
The tragic incidents involving the detonation of communication devices have raised alarms about public safety in Lebanon. The explosions coincided with heightened tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border, where exchanges of fire have been ongoing since the escalation of conflict in Gaza over 11 months ago. Although Israel has not officially commented on the bombings, security analysts speculate that the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, may have been involved, citing its history of similar operations.
Hezbollah has claimed that its cross-border shelling operations are intended as support for Gaza, further complicating the security landscape in the region. As the situation develops, the precautionary measures taken by airlines like Qatar Airways reflect a broader effort to safeguard passengers and maintain order in the face of escalating violence.
