Carrefour has announced the closure of all its branches in Jordan starting November 4, 2024, following a significant boycott campaign against the company due to its perceived support for the Israeli occupation. According to a poll by the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan, 93% of Jordanians have participated in the boycott, highlighting widespread public discontent with Carrefour's operations in the country. The boycott movement has been ongoing for over a year, and previous attempts by Carrefour Jordan, owned by the UAE's Majid Al Futtaim Group, to change its brand name to mitigate the backlash were unsuccessful.
The decision to close all stores has been celebrated by the boycott movement as a victory for the Jordanian people, who have called for an end to Carrefour's presence in the market. This closure follows a gradual reduction in the number of operational branches, with some locations already removing the Carrefour name from their signs. The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by its decision, thanking customers for their support throughout its operations in Jordan.
