Putin Praises Trump Amid Ongoing Tensions with Ukraine
In a recent press conference held on the sidelines of a security summit in Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed admiration for President-elect Donald Trump, describing him as a "smart and experienced" politician capable of navigating complex international relations. Putin suggested that the Biden administration may be attempting to create obstacles for Trump regarding U.S.-Russia relations, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He stated, "It is possible that the current administration wants to create additional difficulties for the future one."
Putin's comments come as tensions escalate between Russia and Ukraine, with the Russian military conducting extensive strikes in response to U.S. support for Ukraine. Over the past two days, Russian forces reportedly launched 100 missiles and 466 drones targeting Ukrainian military and industrial facilities. Putin emphasized that Russia will continue to respond to attacks from Ukraine, particularly those involving Western-supplied missiles, asserting that the Kremlin is aware of the number of missiles supplied to Ukraine and the implications of their use against Russian territory.
Russia's Military Strategy and Threats
During the same press conference, Putin discussed Russia's military capabilities, specifically referencing the new Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, which he claimed could be used against Ukrainian military targets. He warned that the missile's striking capabilities are comparable to nuclear weapons but clarified that it is not nuclear and is designed to be highly accurate without causing environmental pollution. Putin's remarks included a veiled threat regarding potential attacks on what he termed "decision-making centres" in Kyiv, indicating a willingness to escalate military actions if provoked.
Putin also criticized the Ukrainian government, labeling it as "completely illegitimate" and asserting that those following its orders are complicit in crimes. He reiterated Russia's commitment to using all means necessary to prevent the transfer of nuclear weapons from Western countries to Ukraine, underscoring the high stakes involved in the ongoing conflict.
