Iran's Nuclear Ambitions: New Centrifuge Installations
A confidential report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has revealed Iran's plans to expand its uranium enrichment capabilities. According to the report, Iran has notified the IAEA of its intention to install additional centrifuges at its Natanz and Fordow facilities. This development comes amid ongoing international scrutiny regarding Iran's nuclear activities.
The IAEA report, which was addressed to member states and obtained by Reuters, indicates that Iran plans to operate advanced IR-6 centrifuges at the Fordow facility, specifically aiming to enrich uranium to a purity of 5%. Notably, the report did not mention any plans for enrichment to 60% purity, a level that is considered close to weapons-grade.
On November 22, Iran informed the IAEA of its intention to install 18 cascades, each containing up to 166 IR-4 centrifuges, at the Natanz facility. The agency confirmed that the installation of the last two cascades of IR-2m centrifuges was completed on November 23. However, the IAEA noted that the injection of uranium into these newly installed centrifuges had not yet commenced as of the report's issuance.
IAEA's Response and Inspection Plans
In light of these developments, the IAEA has indicated that it will intensify its inspection activities at the Fordow facility once the new centrifuges are operational. The agency is currently assessing how these changes will affect the frequency and intensity of its inspections at both Natanz and Fordow.
The report also highlighted that Iran intends to test medium and complete sets of 174 IR4, IR6, or IR2m centrifuges in its production lines at Natanz. Furthermore, Iran has expressed plans to install a total of up to 1,152 IR-6 centrifuges at the Natanz facility for the purpose of enriching uranium to 5% purity.

The IAEA's findings come on the heels of a recent decision by the agency condemning Iran for its insufficient cooperation regarding its nuclear program.
