Pope Francis Urges Immediate Presidential Elections in Lebanon
Pope Francis has made a heartfelt appeal to Lebanese politicians to expedite the election of a new president, emphasizing the need to restore order to the country's institutions. Speaking from St. Peter's Square after Sunday Mass, the Pope stated, "I urgently call on all Lebanese politicians to elect a president of the republic immediately, so that institutions can return to their normal work, carry out the necessary reforms, and ensure the country's role as an example of peaceful coexistence between different religions."
Ceasefire in Lebanon and Broader Regional Concerns
The Pope welcomed the recent ceasefire in Lebanon, expressing hope that all involved parties would adhere to it, allowing affected populations, including Lebanese and Israelis, to return to their homes. He also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, stating, "I hope that the light of peace that led to the ceasefire in Lebanon will spread to all other fronts, especially Gaza." Additionally, he highlighted the dire situation in Syria, urging prayers for the country as the war has resumed, claiming many lives.
Political Stalemate and Future Prospects
The call for a presidential election comes as Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has scheduled a session for January 9 to elect a president, a position that has remained vacant for nearly two years. The political landscape has been marred by divisions between Hezbollah and its opponents, which have hindered the election process since President Michel Aoun's term ended on October 31, 2022. However, Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, has expressed a commitment to contribute effectively to the election process in a constitutional manner.
