Massacre in Haiti: Over 200 Killed Amid Gang Violence
In a shocking incident in Haiti, the United Nations has reported that more than 200 individuals, primarily elderly men and women, were killed in a brutal massacre attributed to gang violence. The victims were accused of practicing witchcraft and sorcery, leading to their execution by the Jeremy Wharf gang, which operates under the leadership of Moniel Mecano Felic. The killings occurred between December 6 and 11, with the gang reportedly taking individuals from their homes and places of worship, interrogating them, and then executing them with firearms and machetes.
The UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that at least 134 men and 73 women lost their lives in this horrific event. Many of the victims were abducted from voodoo temples during ceremonies, highlighting the targeted nature of the attacks. The violence stemmed from accusations made by Felic, who believed that local voodoo practitioners had cast a spell causing his son's illness. This led him to orchestrate a campaign of terror against the community, punishing those he deemed responsible.
The Jeremy Wharf gang has been a dominant force in the area for approximately 15 years, controlling a strategic zone that connects major ports and highways outside the Haitian capital. The UN has called for justice and accountability for the perpetrators of this massacre, emphasizing the need for protection of vulnerable communities in Haiti.
