Macron's Controversial Remarks on Haiti's Political Crisis
French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked outrage after labeling Haitian officials as "completely stupid" for dismissing Prime Minister Garry Conille, who was appointed just five months ago in a bid to stabilize Haiti. This statement was made during a video recorded on November 20, 2024, at the Humanity Summit in Rio, Brazil, and has since gone viral on social media.
In the video, Macron responds to a Haitian professor, Marky Jean Pierre, who confronted him about the dire situation in Haiti, where rampant gang violence controls approximately 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Macron stated, "Frankly, it is Haitians who destroyed Haiti. They had a PM (Conille) who was perfect, and they fired him. They are complete idiots." His comments reflect a broader frustration with the political instability that has plagued Haiti, exacerbated by drug trafficking and gang violence.
The dismissal of Conille by the Haitian presidential transitional council on November 10 was part of a broader attempt to restructure the government, which included changes to the Ministries of Justice, Finance, Defense, and Health. Conille himself has criticized the council's decision as "tainted with illegality," highlighting the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
