Armed Opposition Takes Control of Aleppo International Airport
In a significant development in the ongoing Syrian conflict, armed opposition forces have successfully captured Aleppo International Airport after intense clashes with Syrian army troops. This marks a pivotal moment, as it is the first time since the onset of the Syrian revolution that opposition forces have reached this crucial infrastructure. Aleppo International Airport is the second of only two international airports in Syria, following Damascus International Airport.
Al Jazeera correspondent Amr Halabi reported that the airport's building and runway remained largely intact, as the fighting involved light weaponry. Most Syrian army personnel stationed at the airport or in nearby military barracks have retreated, with only a few remaining to engage in skirmishes with the opposition. The capture of the airport is part of a broader offensive by the armed opposition, which has also taken control of the Nayrab military airport and the military infantry school in northern Aleppo.
This strategic victory for the opposition comes on the heels of their earlier successes in seizing three other military airports: Abu al-Duhur, Kuweires, and Meng. The ongoing military operations underscore the escalating tensions and shifting power dynamics in the region.
