Olympic Rings Grace Eiffel Tower, a Symbol of Global Unity
The iconic Olympic rings have been majestically installed on the Eiffel Tower ahead of the Paris 2024 Games, captivating onlookers with a display of both engineering prowess and symbolic significance. Made entirely of recycled steel, the 29-meter wide and 15-meter high structure was crafted by ArcelorMittal, right in the north of France. The colors—blue, yellow, black, green, and red—were originally chosen by Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, to represent the diversity of nations worldwide.
Installed between the first and second floors of the monument, the rings were hoisted 70 to 90 meters into the Parisian night sky, using two colossal cranes and the efforts of rope technicians. The event elicited awe from an international audience, including locals and tourists who happened to be strolling near the iconic landmark. A group of French spectators even broke into a spontaneous rendition of 'La Marseillaise' following the installation. This spectacle marks the commencement of Olympic celebrations, symbolizing unity, competition, and camaraderie among nations.
Historic Night of Installation
The Olympic rings' installation was more than just an engineering feat; it was a grand celebration. At 12:45 a.m., under a backdrop of opera music, the rings began their ascent. The late-night endeavor was witnessed by a lucky few who stayed up to capture the historic moment. Upon reaching the designated height, the rings were meticulously affixed to the tower's primary framework by technicians from the Jarnias company.
This extraordinary operation marks the culmination of two years of meticulous planning and eight months of production effort. A prelude to the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games, these rings will remain lit in dazzling white every night by 100,000 LEDs, making the Eiffel Tower shine even brighter until the conclusion of the Paralympic Games. This installation, larger than the rings placed on Tower Bridge in London for the 2012 Olympics, symbolizes the spirit of the Games, ready to welcome athletes from around the globe.
