Millions Gather for Arbaeen Pilgrimage in Karbala
As temperatures soar above 50 degrees Celsius, millions of visitors from Iraq and around the world are making their way to Karbala to commemorate the Arbaeen pilgrimage of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. This annual event, which occurs 40 days after Ashura, marks the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his family during the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The Iraqi government has mobilized extensive security and service forces to ensure the safety and comfort of the attendees, as confirmed by government media spokesman Haider Majeed.
Security Measures and Community Support
In preparation for the influx of pilgrims, the Baghdad Operations Command has implemented a comprehensive plan to secure the visit. This includes the deployment of security personnel from the Ministries of Defense and Interior, as well as other agencies. Enhanced measures such as opening new entry ports, increasing passport processing capabilities, and providing additional transportation through 350 extra buses have been initiated to accommodate the expected crowd, which could reach up to four million attendees, particularly from neighboring Iran.
A Warm Welcome Amidst Challenges
Despite the extreme heat, the spirit of hospitality thrives in Karbala. Local residents, including those managing motorcades and food services, have expressed their commitment to serving the visitors selflessly. Dining tables are set up across the city, offering meals to anyone in need. Community members like Yahya Consul report providing approximately 10,000 meals daily, showcasing the unity and determination of the people to welcome pilgrims regardless of their backgrounds. The successful cooperation between different security forces and the community has ensured a stable environment for the Arbaeen visit, allowing participants to focus on their spiritual journey.
