How to Cancel and Edit Messages on iMessage

Sending a text message can sometimes lead to embarrassing situations, especially if it's sent to the wrong person or contains errors. Thankfully, iPhone users can breathe a sigh of relief with the iMessage app's features that allow them to unsend or edit messages after they've been sent. This functionality is exclusive to iMessage, Apple's secure messaging service, available across its devices including the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch.

Unsend a Message in iMessage

To cancel sending a message, users must act quickly, as this feature is only available for two minutes after the message is dispatched. Here’s how it works: open the iMessage app, navigate to the conversation containing the message, and press and hold the message bubble. A pop-up menu will appear, allowing you to select “Undo Send.” This action will delete the message from both your device and the recipient's device, providing a sense of relief from the potential embarrassment of a miscommunication.

Edit a Message in iMessage

If you need to correct a mistake in a sent message, iMessage also offers an editing feature. Users have a 15-minute window to make changes, with the ability to edit a message up to five times. To do this, simply open the conversation, press and hold the message bubble, and choose “Edit” from the menu. After making your changes, save them by pressing the (✓) sign. A “Modified” label will appear beneath the text, allowing both senders and recipients to view previous versions of the message, ensuring transparency in communication.

  • The unsend feature is particularly useful for avoiding misunderstandings or correcting mistakes before they escalate. However, it is important to note that this feature is only available for iMessages, meaning it won't work if you're messaging someone using a different platform or device. Similarly, while editing messages can help maintain clarity, both parties will be aware of the changes, which adds an element of accountability to conversations. These features are part of Apple's ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience and privacy in digital communication.
