Maldives Bans Israeli Passport Holders Amid Gaza War
The Maldives, an idyllic archipelago in the Indian Ocean renowned for its luxury resorts and white sand beaches, has announced a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering the country. The decision comes in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
According to a news release from the Maldivian presidential office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has imposed the ban following a recommendation from his cabinet. The move will also involve amending the country's laws and establishing a cabinet subcommittee to oversee the implementation of the ban.
In response to the announcement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry advised its citizens to avoid traveling to the Maldives. Furthermore, they urged Israeli citizens currently in the country to consider leaving, citing the potential difficulties in providing assistance if they fall into distress.
The decision has stirred reactions among Israelis who frequently visit the Maldives for its serene holiday experience. Tali Yativ, CEO of Spirit Productions Olam, expressed his frustration, stating, 'I sell the Maldives and tell people, don't go there — don't go anywhere they don't want us.' The travel advisory has added an unwelcome twist for those like Or Zeno, who had planned a vacation to the Maldives and described the announcement as shocking and disappointing.
The president of the Maldives has also vocalized strong support for the Palestinian cause. President Muizzu condemned an Israeli airstrike on a displaced persons camp in Rafah, which resulted in significant casualties. Moreover, he has announced plans to appoint a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs and organize a fundraiser to support Palestinians. The president will also lead a nationwide rally under the slogan 'Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,' translating to 'Maldives in solidarity with Palestine.'
- Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives last year, constituting about 0.6% of the total number of tourists in the country. The recent travel ban is expected to impact this influx significantly.
- The Maldivian government's decision aligns with President Muizzu's recent condemnation of Israeli military actions in Gaza. The call for an immediate ceasefire and the need for unhindered humanitarian access emphasizes the Maldives' stance on the conflict.
- Reactions from the Israeli tourism industry highlight a broader discourse on travel advisories in conflict zones. Travel agencies and citizens are re-evaluating destinations, putting safety and political climate at the forefront of decision-making.
