Lebanese Political Forces Respond to Escalating Conflict with Israel
As tensions escalate between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanese political factions have made their positions clear regarding the ongoing military confrontations. The conflict, which intensified after Hezbollah opened the southern front to support Gaza, is viewed by some as a 'fierce' war on Lebanon, raising concerns about its impact on the already struggling Lebanese populace. Political leaders across the spectrum have expressed fears that the conflict could exacerbate existing crises in the country, which has been grappling with economic collapse, a pandemic, and political instability since 2019.
Calls for Ceasefire Amid Internal Divisions
While some factions, such as the Amal Movement and Hezbollah, emphasize the urgency to halt the war before addressing internal political matters, others, including the Lebanese Forces, Kataeb, and Free Patriotic Movement, are advocating for the election of a new president as a priority. MP Qassem Hashem from the Development and Liberation Bloc has underscored that the conflict with Israel transcends political affiliations and is a national concern that affects all Lebanese citizens. He argues that the Israeli aggression is not confined to southern Lebanon but has now reached other areas, including Mount Lebanon and the north.
Divergent Views on Hezbollah's Role
The Lebanese Forces Party has voiced criticism of Hezbollah's unilateral decision to engage in hostilities with Israel, asserting that such a declaration of war should lie solely with the Lebanese state. Charles Jabbour, head of the media department in the Lebanese Forces, described Hezbollah's actions as a 'sin against Lebanon,' claiming that the party's decision has led to widespread destruction and suffering among the Lebanese people, who largely oppose the war. This sentiment echoes a broader call for unity among Lebanese factions in the face of external aggression, despite their internal differences.
