British Foreign Secretary Criticizes Ban on UNRWA and Advocates for Ceasefire
In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed strong disapproval of the Israeli Knesset's decision to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He described the move as a "grave mistake" and emphasized the importance of UNRWA in delivering essential aid to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Lammy announced that the UK has restored funding to UNRWA, highlighting its critical role in humanitarian efforts amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Lammy called on the international community to unite in support of a ceasefire in Gaza, which has been under intense Israeli military action since October 7, 2023. He underscored the necessity of ensuring the safety of journalists operating in the region, who have faced significant risks while covering the conflict.
Support for Political Settlement in Lebanon
Turning to the situation in Lebanon, Lammy noted that Israel has significantly weakened Hezbollah's military capabilities. He expressed the UK’s backing for a political resolution in Lebanon and highlighted the potential role of the Lebanese army in stabilizing the region. This comes as US envoy Amos Hochstein is reportedly working on a ceasefire proposal that has garnered heightened optimism from American officials.
Reports indicate that the proposed agreement includes commitments from both Hezbollah and Israel to adhere to Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the deployment of the Lebanese army as the sole armed force in southern Lebanon, alongside UNIFIL forces. Since September 23, Israel has escalated its military operations against Hezbollah, launching extensive airstrikes across Lebanon, including the capital, Beirut, and initiating ground incursions along the border.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts continue, with hopes for a ceasefire and a political settlement gaining traction.
