Hezbollah's Role in Lebanon's Resistance Movement
Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib has reaffirmed Hezbollah's status as a legitimate resistance movement for the Lebanese people, emphasizing that its existence is justified by the ongoing occupation. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Bou Habib stated, "If there is occupation, there will be resistance," highlighting the complexities surrounding Hezbollah's role in Lebanon's socio-political landscape.
Commitment to Security Council Resolution 1701
Minister Bou Habib reiterated Lebanon's commitment to fully implementing Security Council Resolution 1701 following a recent ceasefire. He noted that both Lebanese and Israeli sides have pledged to adhere to the resolution, stating, "If Israel starts violating the resolution, that means it is not implementing it." He expressed confidence that all Lebanese factions are committed to this agreement, which aims to maintain peace and stability in the region.
Strengthening Lebanese Military Presence
The Lebanese army is set to bolster its presence in southern Lebanon, with plans to deploy an additional 5,000 soldiers within 60 days, joining the existing 5,000 troops and the 10,000 UNIFIL forces already stationed there. Bou Habib emphasized that this increased military presence, alongside UNIFIL, will serve as a deterrent against potential attacks. He also dismissed concerns about possible confrontations between the Lebanese army and Hezbollah, asserting that there has been no conflict between the two entities for decades and that Hezbollah has accepted the government's agreements in full.
