Jordan Receives Body of Maher Al-Jazzy After King Hussein Bridge Incident

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced today that it has received the body of Maher Al-Jazzy Al-Huwaitat, known as the perpetrator of the King Hussein Bridge operation, which resulted in the deaths of three Israelis last week. The ministry confirmed that Al-Jazzy's body was handed over from the Israeli authorities to be buried in Jordan after being returned to his family. This transfer comes amid ongoing efforts by the ministry to secure the release of two Jordanian citizens, Musleh Al-Awdat and Hussein Al-Naimat, who were detained following the shooting incident.

In a statement, the Jordanian News Agency (Petra) reported that the ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure the proper handling of the situation. Al-Jazzy's brother, Kasab Al-Jazzy, has been in contact with the Foreign Ministry to follow up on the details regarding the body’s reception. Meanwhile, Sheikh Habis Al-Huwaitat, a cousin of the martyr, noted that the family is convening to discuss funeral arrangements, emphasizing their desire for a ceremony that honors Al-Jazzy’s actions.

The situation has sparked significant public interest in Jordan, with mass demonstrations occurring in Amman and other cities, demanding the return of Al-Jazzy’s body after it was detained by Israeli forces following the incident. Reports indicate that the Israeli authorities decided to return the body due to mounting pressure from the Jordanian public and to maintain security relations between the two nations.

Al-Jazzy, a retired soldier and truck driver, was involved in the shooting at the Allenby crossing on September 8, where he opened fire on Israeli border security forces, resulting in fatalities before being killed himself. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the day of the incident as particularly challenging for Israel.
