Javier Milei's May Pact: A New Era for Argentina
Javier Milei has achieved a significant milestone with the signing of the May Pact, a set of medium and long-term objectives aimed at moving Argentina forward. Despite taking longer than anticipated, Milei managed to secure the signatures of 18 out of 24 governors at midnight on July 9, 2024. This event, held in the historic house in Tucumán where Argentina declared its independence from Spain in 1816, was imbued with a sense of founding spirit. Milei's mission is clear: to dismantle the State, end the political 'caste,' and eradicate any trace of 'socialism' in Argentina.
The May Pact: Key Points and Political Dynamics
The May Pact includes ten key points such as fiscal balance, cuts to public spending, and reforms in the labor and pension systems. Milei likened these principles to those that allowed Argentina to flourish after the 1852 Constitution. However, the event was marked by notable absences, including former presidents Cristina Kirchner, Alberto Fernández, and Eduardo Duhalde, as well as governors aligned with Kirchnerism. Despite these absences, Milei's display of political strength was evident, as he managed to gather support from governors who do not belong to his party, La Libertad Avanza. The aesthetics of the event were meticulously curated to evoke the spirit of Argentina's independence heroes.
Milei's Popularity: A Mixed Bag Across Provinces
In parallel with the signing of the May Pact, a survey by CB Consultora Opinión Pública revealed a mixed but generally positive image of Milei across Argentina. Conducted between July 3 and 7, the survey showed Milei with a positive image balance in 20 out of 24 provinces. His popularity improved in 14 provinces, including Córdoba, San Juan, and Salta, but declined in 10 others, such as Mendoza, San Luis, and Santiago del Estero. Analyst Cristian Buttié attributed the positive trends to the recent approval of the Base Law and fiscal package, which have reinforced public trust in Milei's ability to implement his government program.
