Imran Khan's Call for Continued Protests in Pakistan
From his prison cell, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged his supporters to maintain their presence in the streets of Islamabad until their demands are met. In a message shared via Twitter, Khan emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, encouraging his followers to 'play until the last ball.' He specifically called on those who have not yet joined the demonstrations to converge at D Chowk, the focal point for the ongoing protests organized by his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The protests, which were initiated following Khan's 'Do or Die' call, have seen thousands of PTI supporters gather near the Red Zone in Islamabad. However, the demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of clashes between protesters and security forces. Eyewitness accounts detail the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by security personnel to disperse crowds, resulting in injuries among demonstrators. Muhammad Muneeb, a protester from Peshawar, described the situation, stating that he witnessed fellow protesters being injured and emphasized their determination to remain at D Chowk until Khan is released.
Escalating Tensions and Government Response
The situation in Islamabad has escalated, with security forces deployed in large numbers to prevent protesters from reaching key government areas. Following violent confrontations, the government has ordered the deployment of army forces, granting them the authority to impose a curfew if necessary. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the violence, asserting that Pakistan cannot afford chaos for political gain. He indicated that negotiations with the PTI may be on the table, despite Khan's refusal to engage with the government.
The protests have not only affected Islamabad but have also led to heightened security measures in other cities, particularly in Punjab province. The unrest has resulted in casualties, including the deaths of four paramilitary personnel and two police officers, further complicating the already tense atmosphere. As the situation develops, the potential for further violence remains a concern, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
