In a bid to prevent demonstrations by supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistani security forces have implemented stringent security measures in the capital, Islamabad. Major roads have been closed, and mobile internet services disrupted, reflecting the escalating political tensions in the country. These actions come as Khan's supporters continue to rally against the current government, which took office following elections in February that faced widespread allegations of fraud.
Khan, who served as Prime Minister for four years, was ousted in April 2022 after losing military support during a vote of no confidence. Since then, he has faced multiple charges, including corruption and political conspiracy, and has been barred from participating in upcoming parliamentary elections. Despite these challenges, his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is actively mobilizing its base to demonstrate its political strength.
Clashes and Injuries Reported
As supporters of Khan converged on Islamabad from the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, they encountered heavy security barriers. Reports indicate that security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds, resulting in injuries to over 80 police personnel during the clashes. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reported that a convoy led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's chief opened fire on police, exacerbating tensions. In response to the unrest, authorities also closed the main highway from Lahore to Islamabad to prevent further inflow of protesters.
International Concerns and Criticism
The Pakistani government has heightened security in anticipation of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, which will see high-level delegations from China, Russia, and India. While the government claims these measures are necessary for the safety of diplomatic delegations, organizations like Amnesty International have condemned the actions as violations of fundamental rights. They argue that the communications blackouts and roadblocks infringe upon citizens' rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and peaceful assembly. Despite the government's crackdown, Khan's supporters maintain that their protests are peaceful and focused on demanding his release and fair elections.
