Italy has expanded its electric vehicle charging network to over 60,000 points, facilitating travel for electric car owners, as highlighted by a recent travel report from a German tourist.

The increase in charging points in Italy reflects a growing commitment to sustainable travel and the adoption of electric vehicles, essential for meeting European environmental goals.

Travelers with electric vehicles can now enjoy more flexibility and convenience when visiting popular destinations in Italy, although regional differences in charging costs and availability still exist.

As the number of electric vehicles continues to rise, further investments in charging infrastructure are likely, enhancing the travel experience for electric car owners.

The trend of electric vehicle tourism in Italy may encourage more international travelers to consider electric cars for their vacations, potentially influencing travel patterns across Europe.

As Italy continues its energy transition, the number of electric car charging points has significantly increased, reaching a total of 60,339 by the end of September 2024. This marks a 13,111 increase over the past year, with 9,661 new installations since the start of 2024. Lombardy leads the regions with 11,687 charging points, followed by Lazio and Piedmont. The growth in charging infrastructure is crucial for supporting the increasing adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

A recent travel report by a German holidaymaker who drove over 2,500 kilometers to Italy in an electric car highlights both the challenges and successes of traveling with electric vehicles. Despite facing some difficulties with charging stations, the traveler found the experience largely positive, noting the presence of charging points even in scenic locations like Lake Como and Rome. He encountered varying charging costs, with some stations charging as much as 90 cents per kilowatt hour, significantly higher than the average in Germany.
