During a significant address at the "SAHA Expo 2024" defense and aviation industry exhibition in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkish defense companies have achieved a record by exporting products to 178 countries this year. The exhibition, which runs from October 22 to 26, is expected to witness agreements totaling $6.2 billion, including $4.6 billion in export contracts.
Erdogan emphasized the advancements in Turkey's defense capabilities, particularly through projects like the Turksat A6 and IMGE satellites, which are pivotal for the upcoming mission to send the first Turkish astronaut to the moon. He noted that Turkish drones, such as the Bayraktar TB2 and Akıncı, have significantly influenced global defense strategies, contributing to Turkey's rising status in the international defense sector. The localization rate in Turkey's defense industry has reached over 80%, indicating a robust domestic production capacity.
The president underscored that Turkey not only fulfills its own defense needs but also provides substantial support to allied nations. He remarked on Turkey's independence in defense procurement, stating that the country has minimized reliance on foreign weapons and equipment. "Some may have an Iron Dome, and we also have a Steel Dome," he quipped, highlighting Turkey's advancements in defense technology.
Erdogan further articulated the importance of maintaining a strong defense posture in light of regional tensions, asserting that Turkey's technological advancements are essential for national security and regional stability. He declared that Turkey's trajectory towards autonomy in defense signifies a new era for the nation and its allies.
