Hezbollah's Recovery and Military Capabilities
Israeli military analysts have recently indicated that Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, is regaining its strength and enhancing its missile capabilities, which now reportedly exceed those of France and Britain. Discussions on Israeli media platforms, particularly Channel 12, highlighted that Hezbollah has intensified its rocket launches over the past two weeks, aiming to draw Israel into a prolonged conflict. Experts like Kobi Marom noted that the focus is shifting from the number of rockets to the proximity of Israeli civilians to potential strike zones.
Former head of Military Intelligence, Amos Yadlin, reinforced the notion that Hezbollah remains a formidable military force along Israel's borders, possessing more missiles than any European nation. He cautioned against underestimating the group, stating that while it has faced setbacks, it is gradually recovering. Major General (res.) Eran Lerman echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the premature optimism among Israelis regarding Hezbollah's defeat may be misplaced. He pointed out that Hezbollah is likely aiming to establish a long-term war of attrition to undermine Israeli morale.
The Need for a Revised Israeli Strategy
Major General (res.) Giora Eiland criticized the lack of a coherent Israeli strategy in Lebanon, contrasting it with Israel's approach in Gaza. He raised concerns about Israel's aggressive military tactics, suggesting they are ineffective against Hezbollah's military capabilities. Eiland emphasized the need for a reassessment of Israel's military posture in the region. Tamir Hayman, head of the Institute for National Security Studies, acknowledged that while Israel has inflicted significant damage on Hezbollah, the group is in the process of recovery and adaptation. He advocated for sustained military pressure on Hezbollah, even suggesting strikes in Beirut, to ensure that any future ceasefire is on Israeli terms.
