Cost of Military Rule in Gaza Estimated at $6.8 Billion Annually
A recent report from the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation has revealed that the cost of enforcing military rule in the Gaza Strip is projected to exceed $6.8 billion annually. This figure, equivalent to approximately 25 billion shekels, encompasses various expenses associated with maintaining military operations in the region. The report highlights that around 20 billion shekels ($5.4 billion) will be allocated to finance military forces, including the upkeep of four army divisions and reserve forces. Additionally, hundreds of millions of shekels will be required for the civil administration mechanism, alongside another 5 to 10 billion shekels ($1.3-2.7 billion) to provide essential civil services to the Palestinian population.
Political Implications and Calls for Reoccupation
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have publicly advocated for the reoccupation of Gaza, suggesting the establishment of settlements and the displacement of Palestinians. Smotrich, addressing a conference of the Israeli Settlements Council, downplayed the financial implications of such actions, claiming that the costs would be significantly lower than reported. He dismissed estimates suggesting a $5 billion expenditure, asserting that it would only amount to a few hundred million. This rhetoric reflects a growing sentiment among certain Israeli officials who are pushing for a more aggressive military stance in Gaza.
Humanitarian Crisis Amid Military Operations
Since the onset of military actions on October 7, 2023, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated dramatically. Reports indicate that approximately 150,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded, with a significant number being children and women. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread destruction, famine, and a humanitarian disaster, with over 11,000 individuals reported missing. The international community continues to express concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians in the region.
