Rising Casualties and Military Tactics in Southern Lebanon
As tensions escalate in southern Lebanon, military expert Brigadier General Hassan Jouni has highlighted the increasing losses suffered by the Israeli army, which are beginning to affect its operational capabilities and morale. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Jouni attributed these losses to the resilience and tactical proficiency of Hezbollah fighters, who have effectively utilized the terrain and their weaponry in ground engagements. Recent clashes have resulted in significant casualties, with the Israeli army reporting 57 officers and soldiers killed since the conflict reignited, including 10 deaths in just one day.
In a notable incident, Hezbollah's missile strike on the 89th Battalion resulted in over 24 injuries and 5 fatalities, indicating a substantial setback for Israeli forces. Hezbollah has also claimed to have killed 70 Israeli soldiers and injured over 600 during the ongoing conflict, alongside the destruction of military assets including Merkava tanks and drones. Jouni emphasized that Hezbollah's strategic advantage in the town of Aita al-Shaab, characterized by a well-prepared defense and effective use of the landscape, has contributed to the Israeli army's difficulties.
International Concerns Over Prolonged Conflict
Amid the escalating violence, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken has expressed concerns regarding the Israeli military operations in Lebanon. During a press conference in Doha, Qatar, he urged that the military actions should not lead to a prolonged conflict and emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution. Blinken stated that while Israel aims to neutralize the threat posed by Hezbollah, it must also take precautions to prevent civilian casualties and avoid endangering UN peacekeeping forces or the Lebanese military.
Despite these diplomatic overtures, Israeli airstrikes have continued unabated, targeting areas in southern Beirut and resulting in civilian infrastructure damage, including the collapse of multiple buildings. The Israeli military has reported additional casualties among its soldiers, raising the total number of Israeli fatalities to 27 since the onset of ground operations in Lebanon. As Blinken prepares to meet with Lebanese officials to discuss the conflict, the situation remains tense, with both sides engaged in ongoing hostilities.
