Israel Intensifies Airstrikes on Southern Beirut Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a significant escalation of hostilities, Israeli warplanes conducted a series of airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut on October 23, 2024, targeting Hezbollah strongholds. Reports indicate that at least 17 airstrikes occurred, resulting in the destruction of six buildings in the Laylaki area. This night of violence has been described as one of the most severe since the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on September 23, nearly a year after previous clashes along the border.
The Lebanese National News Agency highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that the raids led to significant casualties, including one individual killed and five others injured. Among the buildings hit was the office of the Al-Mayadeen news channel, which is known for its pro-Hezbollah stance. The airstrike on Al-Mayadeen's office occurred in a residential complex and sparked a large fire, further compounding the destruction in the area.
The Israeli military had previously issued warnings via social media for residents to evacuate southern Beirut, yet the attack on the Janah area came without prior notice. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 2,546 deaths and more than 11,862 injuries since the escalation began, with over 1.34 million people displaced, primarily since the start of the war.
Hezbollah Responds with Rocket Barrages
In retaliation, Hezbollah has ramped up its military operations, launching rocket barrages and suicide drones targeting Israeli positions. The Shiite militant group has intensified its attacks on Israeli settlements near the border and cities further inland, marking a significant increase in cross-border hostilities. The current conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war, with both sides showing no signs of de-escalation.
As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing violence, particularly in densely populated areas like southern Beirut. The destruction of residential complexes and the targeting of media outlets underscore the increasingly precarious situation for civilians caught in the crossfire.
