Israel Signs $3 Billion Deal to Procure 25 Additional F-35 Jets
Enhancing Military Cooperation and Strategic Strength
Israel has taken a significant step in bolstering its military capabilities by signing a $3 billion deal with the United States to purchase 25 additional F-35 fighter jets. Announced on Tuesday, the deal will see Israel start receiving these advanced aircraft from Lockheed Martin in 2028, at a rate of 3 to 5 jets per year.
Defense Minister Yoav Galant highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, "At a time when some of our opponents are seeking to undermine our ties with our largest ally, we are strengthening our alliance. This sends a strong message to our enemies in the region."
These F-35 jets, also known as fifth-generation fighters, are revered for their stealth capabilities, enabling them to operate undetected by enemy radar systems. This procurement will expand Israel's fleet of F-35s to 75, solidifying its position as the only country in the region with such advanced aircraft.
The deal underscores the profound military and economic ties between the US and Israel. The American aid package signed by President Joe Biden last April, amounting to $26.4 billion — including $14 billion in military aid — has facilitated this purchase. Furthermore, Israeli companies will benefit economically through partnerships in the production of the F-35s, contributing to local job creation and technological advancements.
The continued conflict in Gaza, resulting in immense humanitarian crises, has drawn criticism towards the absolute American military support for Israel. Despite a UN Security Council resolution and orders from the Court of Justice urging Israel to cease hostilities, the conflict has persisted, leading to significant casualties and destruction.
This latest procurement is part of a broader strategic initiative by the Ministry of Defense and the IDF to strengthen Israel's defense capabilities in face of existing and future threats.
Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Major General (Res.) Eyal Zamir, commented, "The deal and others we are promoting will help ensure the continued strengthening of the IDF and its readiness for multi-arena challenges in the years to come. We thank the American government for its support in preserving Israel's qualitative and technological advantage."
- The F-35 fighter jets, also known as Adir (meaning 'Mighty') in Israeli nomenclature, represent the pinnacle of modern military aviation technology. These stealth aircraft provide significant tactical advantages, including superior avionics, integrated sensor systems, and advanced maneuvrability.
- Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer, along with engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, have committed to collaborating with Israeli companies in the production of these jets. This collaboration is expected to stimulate the Israeli economy by fostering technological innovation and creating new employment opportunities.
- This deal follows the approval of various defense committees in Israel, reflecting the high level of domestic support for enhancing military capabilities in light of regional threats. The continuous strengthening of the Israeli Air Force is seen as crucial for maintaining national security and exerting strategic influence.
