Iraq's Stance on Regional Security Amid Israeli-Iranian Tensions
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has firmly rejected the use of Iraq's territory or airspace for any potential Israeli military action against Iran. During a press conference in Baghdad with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, Hussein emphasized that the preparations for such an attack by Israel pose a significant threat to both regional and international security. He warned that any escalation in conflict could destabilize not only the region but also global energy security and international trade.
Hussein articulated that the decision regarding war and peace is a matter reserved for the Iraqi state authorities, in accordance with the Iraqi constitution, asserting that Iraq will not serve as a platform for aggression. He cautioned that further conflict could lead to chaos that terrorist organizations, including ISIS, may exploit, thereby endangering both regional and global security.
In support of Iraq's position, Araghchi acknowledged the importance of Iraq's commitment to maintaining regional stability and good neighborly relations. He noted that the region is currently in a highly sensitive phase, with the risk of escalation heightened due to ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Araghchi highlighted Tehran's recent diplomatic efforts aimed at mitigating tensions and preventing a broader conflict.
