Iraq Denies Iranian Attacks on Israel from Its Territory
Iraq has firmly rejected allegations that Iran is using its territory to launch attacks against Israel. The Iraqi Armed Forces' spokesperson, Yahya Rasool, emphasized that such claims are false pretexts aimed at justifying attacks on Iraq's sovereignty. Rasool reiterated Iraq's commitment to maintaining its land and airspace free from the ongoing conflict, which he attributed to Israel's aggressive policies in the region. He also reaffirmed Iraq's support for the Palestinian and Lebanese struggles against Israeli actions, which he described as genocidal.
Response to Axios Report
The Iraqi government's denial comes in response to a report by Axios, which cited two unnamed Israeli sources claiming that Iran was preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi soil using drones and ballistic missiles. The report suggested that pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq might be involved, potentially as a means for Tehran to evade direct Israeli retaliation against its strategic targets. However, an informed source later denied any indications of such an attack to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation.
U.S. Warnings and Regional Tensions
In light of these escalating tensions, the U.S. administration has warned the Iraqi government that failure to prevent any Iranian attacks from its territory could lead to Israeli strikes on Iraq. This comes after a recent Israeli airstrike on Iranian military installations, which resulted in casualties. Iran has vowed to respond harshly to Israeli aggression, further complicating the already tense geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
