Iran's Stance on Turkey's Role in Syria
Ali Akbar Velayati, the advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader for international affairs, has publicly criticized Turkey's involvement in the ongoing conflict in Syria, suggesting that it has fallen into a trap set by the United States and Israel. In an interview with Iran's Tasnim News Agency, Velayati expressed disappointment over Turkey's actions, stating that it has become a tool for American and Israeli interests, which he did not foresee. He emphasized Iran's unwavering support for the Syrian government, asserting that the Islamic Republic will stand by Syria until the end.
Velayati acknowledged Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's intelligence and foreign policy experience, expressing hope that he could rectify Turkey's foreign policy mistakes. However, he lamented that Turkey, with its rich Islamic heritage, succumbed to external pressures. He called on regional players, including both Arab and non-Arab countries, to recognize Iran's commitment to supporting Syria's territorial integrity and government.
Iran's Alliances in the Syrian Conflict
The Iranian official highlighted that Syria's allies today are more numerous than they were in 2011, citing Russia, Hezbollah, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, the Houthis in Yemen, and Palestinian groups as key supporters. Velayati underscored the unity among these allies in their commitment to Syria's sovereignty.
In a broader political context, Velayati also addressed the incoming US administration under President-elect Donald Trump, advising him to learn from past experiences and recognize the complexities of global politics. He criticized the current Democratic administration for exacerbating conflicts worldwide and warned that independent nations would not yield to US threats. This statement reflects Iran's strategic positioning in the region and its ongoing commitment to supporting its allies amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
