Investigation into Jean-François Copé's Use of Municipal Vehicles
The investigation into Jean-François Copé, the mayor of Meaux, has intensified following allegations of improper use of municipal vehicles. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed that an investigation was opened in June 2024, prompted by a report from the Regional Audit Office (CRC) that highlighted excessive use of a service vehicle and two drivers without the necessary authorization from the municipal council. The CRC's report indicated that Copé had incurred costs of approximately 126,000 euros per year between 2018 and 2020 for these services, which were allegedly used for personal journeys beyond his official duties.
The anti-corruption organization Anticor has played a significant role in bringing this matter to light, having reported the situation to the public prosecutor's office in February 2023. Inès Bernard, the general delegate at Anticor, expressed concern over the lengthy response time from the prosecutor's office, questioning the efficiency of the judicial process. Copé, who has been serving as mayor since 1995, maintains that he was unaware of any need for municipal council approval for the use of the vehicle and insists that all resources were utilized strictly for his mayoral responsibilities.
