Impact of Paris Olympics on Summer Travel Plans
Many Israelis planned a summer vacation in Paris, but they might not have considered the significant impact the upcoming Olympics will have on the city. The largest sporting event in the world, taking place from July 26 to August 11, is expected to bring heavy traffic, full-capacity hotels, and numerous other changes that could greatly affect travel plans.
Security Measures and Price Increases
The Olympics will result in many roads being blocked and heavy security around the city, leading to significant traffic congestion. Hotel prices have skyrocketed, with some hotels charging up to three times their usual rates. For instance, a room at the Hôtel Marais Grands Boulevards that typically costs around NIS 474 per night could go up to NIS 1,653 during the Olympics.
Charente-Maritime's Adjustments for the Olympics
Due to the Olympics, Charente-Maritime is also preparing for an exceptional and disrupted security system. The Ministry of the Interior has requested the total availability of police officers and gendarmes between June 15 and September 15. This will ensure that the department, which hosts major events like the Francofolies de La Rochelle, maintains a high level of security and commitment despite the large number of civil servants and soldiers dispatched to Paris.
- The military commander of Paris has expressed concerns about potential threats such as terrorism, drones, protests, and cyber-attacks. To mitigate these risks, the largest military camp since World War II has been built in Paris.
- The national police will mobilize 75% of its total workforce throughout the summer, increasing to 100% during the Olympics. The gendarmerie will also have a higher number of personnel, supplemented by 115 reservists. Additionally, 100 seasonal firefighters have been recruited to strengthen fire rescue centers in Charente-Maritime.
- Tourists should also be aware that flight prices to Paris are very high during this period, and restaurants and attractions are expected to be full. Changes in tourist sites are anticipated due to the heavy tourist load and security measures.
- Visiting Paris during the Olympics is a unique experience, but it comes with high costs and potential inconveniences. Those not interested in sports or large events should consider the significant impact the Olympics will have on the city.
