Escalation in Israeli-Lebanese Conflict
Smoke rose as a result of the fall of a shell fired by Hezbollah from southern Lebanon towards the occupied Golan Heights. A senior American official expressed deep concern about the escalating tensions on the Israeli-Lebanese border, warning of the potential for an all-out war after Hezbollah launched a significant attack on northern Israel. This escalation follows Hezbollah's largest and most extensive attack since October 8, when it began supporting the resistance in Gaza.
Hezbollah announced that it carried out a combined attack with missiles and drones in response to an Israeli assassination in the town of Joya. In retaliation, Israel held Hezbollah, Iran, and the Lebanese government fully responsible for the escalation, with Israeli government spokesman David Mincer stating that Israel would restore security on its northern borders, whether through diplomatic efforts or otherwise.
Regional and International Reactions
In response to the recent escalation, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein warned of the danger of the conflict expanding in southern Lebanon, emphasizing that any attack on southern Lebanon would affect the entire region. Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri echoed these concerns, suggesting that Israel might seek to expand its aggression due to its failures in Gaza.
A draft final statement to be issued after the G7 summit will express deep concern about the situation and support American efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. The G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and called on Israel to refrain from large-scale attacks on Rafah, in adherence to international law.
Since October 8, Palestinian and Lebanese factions, most notably Hezbollah, have been exchanging daily bombardments with the Israeli army across the Blue Line, resulting in hundreds of casualties, primarily on the Lebanese side. The factions stand in solidarity with Gaza, which has faced a devastating Israeli war since October 7, causing over 122,000 Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction.
The conflict intensified further with the death of a senior Hezbollah military commander, Taleb Sami Abdallah, in an Israeli airstrike in the town of Joya. This strike also resulted in the deaths of three other individuals, including another Hezbollah member, Mohammad Hussein Sabra. The Israeli army reported carrying out bombings in response to Hezbollah's launch of approximately 50 rockets from southern Lebanon, highlighting the increasing intensity of the exchanges between the two sides.
More than eight months of violence have left hundreds dead in Lebanon, including civilians and Hezbollah fighters. Tens of thousands of residents on both sides of the border have been displaced by the incessant fighting. Amid these tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel is prepared for a very intense operation on its border with Lebanon.
