Gims Declines Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony Offer
In a significant revelation, Congolese rapper Gims has confirmed that he turned down an invitation to perform during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Speaking to the Belgian media outlet Ciné-Télé-Revue, Gims, whose real name is Gandhi Djuna, stated, 'It was offered to me, but it was not my will.' The artist, known for his involvement in the Parisian group Sexion d'Assault and his successful solo career, emphasized that he doesn't want to 'be everywhere.'
Notably, Gims had an opportunity to perform at another major international event just last year. He was part of the closing ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he performed 'Arhbo,' one of the anthems, alongside a Puerto Rican artist. 'For an artist, an event which brings together more than a billion people cannot be refused, it’s a source of pride, it’s enormous,' Gims reflected at the time. Despite the magnitude of the offer to perform at the Olympic Games, Gims opted to prioritize his selective approach to public appearances.
Speculations on Paris 2024 Performers
While Gims may not be gracing the stage at the upcoming Olympic Games, speculation surrounds the names of other performing artists. According to Le Canard Enchaîné, the French State has earmarked 2.7 million euros to secure two 'top artists' for the opening ceremony. The names Aya Nakamura and Céline Dion have surfaced, sparking widespread curiosity and anticipation.
However, the organizing committee of the Olympic Games has refuted claims about paying the artists. 'Contrary to the information relayed in the media, the artists who will perform during the ceremonies of the Paris 2024 Games will not receive a fee for their performance,' a spokesperson stated. This leaves the confirmation of the artists involved still hanging in the balance.
- Gims, formerly known as Maître Gims, first gained fame as part of the Parisian septet Sexion d'Assault. The group enjoys substantial popularity, boasting nearly two million monthly listeners on Spotify.
