German authorities announced a historic seizure of over 35.5 tons of cocaine in a major crackdown against drug networks. This operation, part of a broader international effort, highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Europe.

Record Cocaine Seizure in Europe: A Serious Blow to Drug Networks

German authorities announced the record seizure of over 35.5 tons of cocaine, predominantly in Hamburg, Europe's third-largest trading port. These operations are part of an investigation into a criminal network operating between Latin America and Europe. The cocaine haul, valued at 2.6 billion euros, took place between April and September 2023, marking the largest total quantity seized in a German investigation to date. As per police and justice services, this record seizure epitomizes Germany's ongoing battle against illegal drug influx, during a time when drug-related fatalities are rising.

The seized drugs were found hidden in maritime containers in key ports: Hamburg (nearly 25 tons), Rotterdam in the Netherlands (8 tons), and Guayaquil in Ecuador (3 tons). This bust alone represents more than half of the total volume of cocaine seized in Germany last year, which authorities estimated at 43 tons. The seizure echoes the dire warnings from various authorities about the relentless flow of cocaine into European ports.

Details of the Investigation and Arrests

According to Ronald Lenz, head of the Stuttgart customs investigation office, Germany is witnessing a 'new dimension in the supply of cocaine.' The diligent investigation unearthed an intricate modus operandi of highly structured networks. Eight suspects aged between 30 to 54, of various nationalities including German, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Moroccan, and Turkish, were identified. Seven have been arrested for smuggling drugs by using front companies to ship them to Europe.

Tino Ingelmann, director of German customs, stressed that ports across Europe are similarly confronted with this problem. The European Commission and Belgium responded by launching a 'European Ports Alliance' in January to enhance international cooperation and more effectively combat drug trafficking. Notably, in Antwerp, one of the main entry points for drugs into Europe, cocaine seizures hit a record 116 tons in 2023.

A Broader International Effort in Cannabis Pollen Seizure

In a related development, more than two tonnes of cannabis pollen were seized on Saturday in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Catalonia, during a joint Franco-Spanish operation. This significant seizure highlights the concerted efforts by French and Spanish authorities to curb drug trafficking in the region. The Mediterranean prefecture noted that a French customs helicopter initially identified the drug-laden boat, which led to a collaborative operation involving multiple Spanish speedboats and a helicopter.

The quick actions of the Franco-Spanish units forced the traffickers to abandon their cargo. Authorities managed to recover 61 bales, amounting to 2.44 tonnes of cannabis pollen. The success of this operation underscores the excellent coordination and resources deployed by both countries in their fight against illegal drug trade.

  • The alarming rise in drug-related deaths in Germany, with over 2,227 fatalities recorded last year, underscores the critical need for robust legal and investigative measures. Hamburg, which has seen some of the largest drug busts in recent years, remains a critical focal point in this ongoing struggle.
  • The 'European Ports Alliance' initiative aims to fortify defense mechanisms against drug smuggling in major ports, enhancing collaborative investigative efforts among European countries.
