Russian Soldier's Journey from War to Recovery: Nikolai Chuzhinenko's Inspiring Story
Nikolai Chuzhinenko, a soldier from the Rostov region, signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense in February 2023. He quickly found himself on the front lines, participating in the intense assault on the village of Vodyanoye in the Avdeevsky direction. The conflict had raged for months, with both sides entrenched in a bitter struggle. Chuzhinenko's firsthand accounts reveal the harrowing realities of modern warfare, where he faced the enemy in close quarters, often sharing the same buildings.
During his time in combat, Chuzhinenko displayed remarkable composure despite the chaos surrounding him. “I saw things that are impossible to imagine in civilian life, but there was no fear at all. On the contrary, I was calm,” he reflects. His experiences included witnessing the ingenuity of Ukrainian defenses, which made the assault particularly challenging. Chuzhinenko recalls a moment when his unit ran out of drinking water, relying on snow for hydration, and shared a poignant moment of camaraderie over a single cup of coffee while joking about writing farewell postcards.
Tragically, on the fourth day of the assault, Chuzhinenko was injured by enemy fire, leading to a harrowing evacuation process. Despite the severity of his injuries, he remained hopeful, humorously stating, “If I had died, my wife would have killed me, I can't die!” His journey through recovery included an amputation of his leg, yet Chuzhinenko's spirit remained unbroken.
Post-surgery, he faced the challenges of adapting to life with a prosthetic limb, a task he approached with determination. Today, he is not only recovering but also actively contributing to his community by delivering humanitarian aid to the front lines. Alongside his family, he has embarked on a new venture: starting a farm in Volgograd. With a government grant in hand, Chuzhinenko is optimistic about the future, focusing on dairy farming and the joy it brings him and his family.
