Ukrainian-Russian Dual National Arrested in France for Suspected Terrorist Plot
In a significant development, a 26-year-old man of Ukrainian and Russian nationality was apprehended in Roissy-en-France on June 3. He is suspected of planning violent actions and is currently under investigation by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat). Originally from the Donbass region, the suspect had recently arrived in France, and was flagged after sustaining injuries from an explosive device in his hotel room.
Following the intervention of firefighters, the man was treated for severe burns at Gonesse hospital. His injuries led to the discovery of various materials for manufacturing explosive devices in his hotel room. Authorities found mobile phones configured to act as detonation devices, traces of ammonium nitrate, and materials such as match powder and barbecue firelighters wrapped in plastic, suggesting an elaborate plan.
Pro-Russian Allegiances and Military Background
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had served two years in the Russian army and exhibited strong pro-Russian sentiments. Authorities also uncovered money, fake passports, and weapons in his possession. His arrest coincided with France's preparations for the 80th-anniversary celebrations of the Normandy Landings, a high-profile event attended by numerous international dignitaries.
The Pnat initiated an inquiry on June 4 for participation in a criminal terrorist association and possession of explosives in connection with a terrorist enterprise. The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had accomplices. The situation has raised alarms, given that the French intelligence services have reportedly thwarted 50 attacks since 2017, highlighting the persistent terrorist threat in Europe.
