France to Host International Conference to Support Lebanon
In a significant diplomatic move, the French government has announced an upcoming international conference aimed at providing support for Lebanon, scheduled for October 24. This initiative, led by President Emmanuel Macron, seeks to gather international and regional organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, to address the pressing needs of the Lebanese people amidst escalating tensions in the region.
The conference will focus on mobilizing the international community's efforts to protect and assist Lebanon, particularly emphasizing the importance of supporting the Lebanese army as a key player in maintaining internal stability. Additionally, it aims to discuss the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution that facilitates the return of displaced persons, in line with Security Council Resolution 1701. France has reiterated its commitment to aiding Lebanon in the election of a new president, further highlighting its role in the region.
This initiative follows recent diplomatic efforts by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who visited several countries, including Lebanon and Israel, to foster dialogue and seek solutions to the ongoing crisis. Reports suggest that the United States, alongside France, is working towards a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, aimed at halting the violence that has erupted since September 23, which has resulted in substantial casualties and displacement within Lebanon.
Since the onset of the conflict, Israeli airstrikes have intensified, leading to the deaths of over 1,300 individuals, including many civilians, and displacing more than 1.2 million people. Hezbollah's retaliatory actions, including missile strikes on Israeli military sites, have contributed to the ongoing cycle of violence. As the situation remains critical, the upcoming conference represents a crucial step towards addressing the humanitarian crisis and seeking a pathway to peace in the region.
