International Flight Cancellations Lead to Skyrocketing Airfare to Israel
In light of escalating security tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, many international airlines have suspended their flights to Israel, resulting in a significant rise in airfare and limited travel options for passengers. Major carriers such as Lufthansa, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Wizz Air have announced cancellations for weeks, leaving travelers scrambling for alternatives.
As the Jewish holidays approach, the demand for flights has surged, causing airline ticket prices to reach unprecedented levels. According to the Israeli newspaper Globes, travelers are now facing exorbitant costs, particularly with Israeli airlines, as they attempt to fill the gap left by international carriers. Yoni Waxman of Offer Tours noted that availability is extremely low, especially in business class, further driving up prices.
For instance, tickets on El Al Israel Airlines to New York have soared to as high as $9,000, with economy seats completely sold out. Flights to Europe are not faring much better; a premium class return ticket to London can cost around $1,700, while a trip to Paris may set travelers back $900.
Travelers are left with few affordable options, often involving long layovers that add to the inconvenience. Revital Ben Natan from Ofakim Travel and Tours highlighted that current prices are now three times higher than pre-war rates, making travel unaffordable for many citizens.
