Right-wing parties triumphed in recent European elections, with Italy's Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia and France's Rassemblement National leading a significant political shift. Discover the details of Europe's changing political landscape.

Europe's Right-Wing Surge: Meloni and Others Triumph in European Elections

In recent European elections, right-wing parties saw a significant surge in support across multiple countries, marking a shift in the political landscape of the continent. Italy's right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her party, Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy), emerged victorious, securing 28.9 percent of the vote according to projections by Italian television channel Rai. This represents a substantial increase from the party's 6.4 percent in the 2019 European elections and situates it well ahead of the left-wing alliance around the social-democratic party PD, which garnered 24.5 percent.

Spain also witnessed a right-wing victory, with the Popular Party (PP) leading the elections and winning 22 of the country's 61 seats in the European Parliament. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, followed closely with 20 seats. Despite an overall decline in voter support for the far-right Vox, which secured 9.6% of the votes compared to 12.4% in the previous general elections, the combined right-wing vote in Spain nearly reached 50 percent.

France's far-right Rassemblement National, led by Marine Le Pen's protégé Jordan Bardella, achieved a landslide victory with approximately 32% of the vote. This more than doubled the support for President Emmanuel Macron's Renaissance party, which stood at 15.2%.

Overall, voter turnout remained a critical issue across the continent. Italy reported a turnout below 50 percent, while Estonia and Lithuania experienced similar trends with turnout figures of 37.7% and 28.4%, respectively. Germany saw its conservative CDU-CSU holding onto a leading position with 29 seats in the European Parliament, while the far-right AfD overtook the SPD for second place. In Austria, the far-right FPO led the race with 27% of the vote.

The results highlighted the disparities between various member states regarding support for right-wing versus left-wing parties. In Finland, the conservative Kok-Epp party led with 25.3% of the vote, whereas in Greece, Nea Dimokratia topped the rankings with an estimated 27-31%. Cyprus saw a different dynamic, with the centre-right Disy leading but also featuring unexpected candidates like YouTuber Fidias Panagiotou making significant strides.

The European Parliament now faces the challenge of navigating these varied political landscapes while addressing the concerns of its increasingly polarized electorate. The presence of right-wing parties in power in key nations is likely to influence the direction of EU policies in the years to come.

  • Giorgia Meloni, Italy's Prime Minister and leader of Fratelli d'Italia, has been a prominent figure in the shift towards right-wing governance within Europe. Her party's roots in the post-fascist movement have often been a point of contention among critics. Despite this, her recent success in the European elections indicates a strong approval of her government's performance.
  • Spain's elections further underscore the fragmentation within the left-wing coalition. Parties like Podemos and Sumar, which are smaller entities within the coalition, struggled to gain significant traction. The overall support for the left, while considerable, showed signs of division, contrasting with the more unified stance of the right.
  • France's political scene remains turbulent, as evidenced by the significant disparity in voter support between the far-right and President Macron's party. High abstention rates, albeit slightly reduced from 2019, highlight the growing disillusionment among French voters with the traditional political framework.
  • Beyond Western Europe, countries like Estonia, Lithuania, and Cyprus reported notably low turnouts, suggesting electoral fatigue and disenchantment with the political status quo. This trend was also seen in Croatia, where voter turnout was just 15.5% at 4:30 PM on election day.
  • The varying voter turnout and fragmented political landscape present the European Union with challenges in maintaining cohesion among its member states while addressing citizen concerns about governance, democracy, and economic stability.
