Escalating Violence: Schools in France Targeted by Fireworks Mortars

Recent attacks involving fireworks mortars at high schools in Marseille and Lyon highlight a disturbing trend of violence against educational institutions in France, prompting calls for enhanced security measures.

Rise in Violence Against Schools in France

In a troubling trend, multiple high schools across France have recently become targets of violent attacks, including the use of fireworks mortars. This alarming phenomenon was highlighted by a morning incident at La Floride vocational high school in Marseille, where mortars were fired around 7:30 a.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and classes were canceled for the day. The academic director and a mobile security team were dispatched to ensure the safety of staff and students.

This incident follows a similar attack at the Auguste and Louis Lumière high school in Lyon, where fireworks mortars were also used. The police quickly intervened, and a 17-year-old suspect was arrested, restoring calm to the area. These events are part of a larger pattern of violence affecting educational institutions across the country, with previous attacks reported in Vénissieux, where a school was subjected to mortar fire and stone throwing.

Pascal Vivier, general secretary of the SNETAA-FO union, expressed deep concern, stating, "I have never seen so many establishments hit by gunfire. It is a phenomenon that affects the whole of France and is very worrying." The Minister of National Education, Anne Genetet, noted that out of 500 priority schools, 400 have already been secured, with ongoing efforts to protect the remaining institutions.

  • The recent spate of violence against schools in France has sparked outrage among educators and parents alike. Unions representing teachers have voiced their concerns about the increasing dangers faced by students and staff in educational settings. In response to these incidents, the prefecture has promised a reinforced police presence around affected schools to deter further violence and ensure safety. The attacks have not only led to physical damage but have also raised questions about the adequacy of security measures in schools, particularly in areas identified as sensitive. With the school year still in its early stages, educators are calling for immediate action to address these safety issues and protect the learning environment. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor and respond to these incidents.
