Displacement as a Weapon: The Ongoing Struggles in the West Bank
In the southern West Bank, the village of Khirbet Zanuta, home to around 40 Palestinian families, has become a symbol of the ongoing struggle against displacement driven by settler violence. These families, who once thrived on their ancestral land through farming and livestock, have faced relentless attacks from settlers, forcing them to abandon their homes in search of safety. In late October 2023, the Al-Tal family and others were compelled to leave their homes due to escalating violence, which included property destruction and livestock theft.
The situation worsened significantly after the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023. Settlers intensified their aggression, leading to severe repercussions for the residents of Khirbet Zanuta. Despite a legal victory that allowed them to return home on August 21, 2024, they were prohibited from repairing their damaged properties. The renewed attacks have led to further displacement, with half of the families considering emigration once again. This cycle of violence and displacement has affected at least 28 Palestinian communities, displacing over 4,450 individuals, including many children, according to United Nations reports.
The Broader Impact of Settler Violence and Demolitions
The systematic displacement tactics employed by settlers have been characterized by intimidation, property destruction, and legal barriers that prevent Palestinian families from rebuilding their lives. The Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission reported nearly 1,944 settler attacks since the beginning of 2024, resulting in numerous casualties and heightened fear among affected communities. The UN has documented the demolition of 1,725 Palestinian facilities, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The ongoing violence has led to a significant increase in the number of displaced Palestinians, with the UN noting that the rate of displacement has more than doubled since the escalation of conflict in October 2023. Settler attacks have not only targeted homes but have also damaged vital infrastructure, including water and sanitation facilities, severely impacting the livelihoods of many families. As a result, residents are left with few options, often forced to seek shelter with relatives or rent accommodations in safer areas.
The plight of Khirbet Zanuta and similar communities highlights the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the humanitarian crisis and protect the rights of Palestinians in the West Bank. The cycle of violence and displacement continues to pose a significant threat to the stability and future of these communities.
