Erdogan Expresses Hope for Trump's Commitment to Middle East Peace
In a recent statement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed optimism that US President-elect Donald Trump will honor his promises to halt Israel's military actions in the Middle East. Speaking to reporters during his return flight from Hungary, Erdogan emphasized the importance of Trump's role in achieving peace in the region. He stated, "Trump made promises to end the conflicts that Israel started, and we want to fulfill them and say enough to Israel."
Erdogan highlighted the ongoing dialogue between Turkey and the US, noting his previous interactions with Trump during his first term. He remarked, "Despite the differences in opinion sometimes, the exemplary partnership between our two countries is not open to discussion." The Turkish leader conveyed his hopes for sustainable peace and stability during Trump's upcoming presidency, emphasizing that Trump's decisions could significantly influence the political and military dynamics in the Middle East.
Furthermore, Erdogan pointed out that a positive shift in US policy, particularly regarding military support to Israel, could be a crucial step towards reducing aggression in Palestine and Lebanon. He stated, "It would be a good start for Trump if he cuts off the supply of weapons to Israel in order to stop the aggression against Palestine and Lebanon."
Turkey has been vocal in its condemnation of Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, recently halting trade with Israel and joining a genocide lawsuit against the country at the International Court of Justice.
